Short version: Direct answer: Chileans buy Bitcoin with pesos through a bank transfer, Webpay or a P2P order priced in CLP, then swap USDT for BTC on a spot market. OKX runs a peso P2P market with no platform fee on the buy leg and charges 0.08% maker / 0.10% taker on spot. This is educational content about how the mechanics work — never a trade recommendation.
The peso leg: three routes that actually work
Chile is one of the easier Latin American markets for fiat onboarding, mostly because the banking system is well connected and Khipu-style payment rails are cheap. There are three practical ways to turn CLP into crypto. Here's the thing, though: the cheapest route is rarely the fastest, and the fastest one is the one your bank quietly charges you for.
Bank transfer is the cheapest and the slowest. You send pesos from your own account to the platform's Chilean account, and the balance credits once the transfer clears, usually within minutes during banking hours. Webpay works like a card checkout and is faster, but some banks treat it as a cash advance and charge interest from day one. P2P is the third route: you pay a merchant by transfer and receive USDT from escrow, which is how OKX handles peso funding.
Whichever route you pick, the account name must match. Chilean platforms check that the cédula and the bank account belong to the same person, and a transfer from a friend's or a company's account is the fastest way to get a deposit frozen for review.
The local exchange picture shifted in 2026. Buda.com, founded in Santiago in 2014, and CryptoMKT still hold the local brand advantage, but both were still working through their CMF registration files this year. Orionx, one of the best-known local venues, shut down in September 2026 after the regulator rejected its application. That is the risk you are pricing when you pick a venue by brand rather than by register entry.
Step by step, from cédula to satoshis
Start with identity. You need a cédula de identidad or a passport, a selfie for liveness, and a bank account in your own name. Chilean residents also use their RUT for tax reporting later, so keep the same identity details across every platform you open.
Then fund the account. On OKX, the peso route is P2P: open the marketplace, select Buy, choose USDT, filter for CLP and pick a merchant with a long order history and a high completion rate. Send the exact amount quoted, from your own bank account, and mark the order paid only after the transfer leaves your account. The USDT releases from escrow when the merchant confirms.
Now buy the Bitcoin. Move USDT from the funding account to the trading account and place a BTC/USDT limit order. Skip the one-click buy screen if you care about cost: instant purchase flows typically add 0.3% to 1% on top of the spot fee. On CLP5,000,000, a 0.7% markup is CLP35,000, which is roughly the entire trading fee on twenty normal spot orders.
Finally, decide where the coins live. Exchange custody is convenient and insured in ways that are hard to verify. Self-custody removes counterparty risk but puts key management on you. A common compromise: leave trading capital on the exchange, move savings to a hardware wallet, and test the address with a small transfer first.
What the numbers look like
Published fees in Chile vary more than the marketing suggests, because local apps often bury the spread inside the quoted peso rate.
| Platform | CLP funding | Spot fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OKX | P2P in CLP | 0.08% maker / 0.10% taker | No OKX fee on the P2P buy leg |
| Binance | Online banking from 12 Chilean banks, P2P, card | 0.10% | Widest bank coverage for direct CLP deposits |
| Buda.com | Bank transfer, Webpay | About 0.5% maker/taker; 0.5%–1.2% on instant buy | Local support in Spanish, smaller order book |
| CryptoMKT | Bank transfer, Khipu | Varies by product | Registration file still in review |
| Bybit | Khipu, P2P, card | 0.10% | Khipu deposit is the draw here |
The spread is the hidden line item. CLP P2P books are thinner than USD books, so quotes drift wider outside Santiago business hours and around month-end when salaries land. Check the merchant's rate against a global BTC/USD quote converted at the observed exchange rate. If the gap is above 1.5%, wait or use a different route.
Withdrawal fees follow the chain, not the amount. USDT over Tron has hovered near 1.5 USDT, while cheaper networks cost a fraction of that. On small transfers the network fee can easily exceed the trading fee, which is why batching withdrawals makes sense.
Test the peso route with a small order.

Ley Fintec 21.521 created a Registro de Prestadores de Servicios Financieros at the CMF. By 2026 the register held roughly 179 authorised entities across financial services, with several hundred more applications in process, and crypto intermediaries and custodians were filing under the NGC 502 standard. Being listed is not the same as being authorised — Plusspay showed that gap in June 2026 when it was registered but not authorised and suspended operations.
For users, the practical test is simple: look the platform up in the CMF register before funding it, and check whether the entry says authorised or in process. A platform that cannot point to an entry at all is operating outside the framework.
Tax reporting tightened at the same time. Since August 2025, exchanges file sworn declarations 1963 and 1964 with the SII covering purchases, sales, swaps, transfers and wallet addresses from 1 January 2025 onward. The first filing was due in June 2026 and they repeat every 30 June. Gains go on Formulario 22 during Operación Renta, which ran from 1 to 30 April in 2026; trades made during 2026 are declared in April 2027.
The SII is already using that data. In September 2025 it reported closing 13 audits of crypto users with collections near CLP4,702 million, and Chile has committed to the OECD's CARF standard with exchanges starting in 2027. Keep the trade history export from every platform, the payment receipts, and an IPC adjustment calculation. If your return and the platform's filing disagree, the difference is what gets questioned.
One more 2026 wrinkle: OKX moved its Latin American users onto the OKX El Salvador entity and required a re-verification round in April 2026. Same platform, different legal counterparty. If you skipped that prompt, your account may be limited until you finish it.
