⚠️ Important: Only Use FIU-Registered Exchanges
India's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) requires every exchange serving Indian users — including offshore platforms — to register under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Unregistered platforms are blocked by ISPs. In October 2025, 25 offshore exchange URLs were blocked. Popular global exchanges like OKX, Bybit and Kraken are NOT registered and cannot legally serve Indian residents.

India's Crypto Landscape at a Glance
- 127 million crypto owners — the world's largest user base (CoinLaw, 2026)
- $135 billion in total crypto economic activity (July 2025 – June 2026, Chainalysis)
- $88.4 billion in centralized exchange inflows — largest in the CSAO region
- 72.66% of trading volume flows offshore — high taxes push users to foreign platforms
- 54 FIU-registered VDASPs as of July 2026 (50 domestic + 4 offshore)
- 31.2% effective tax on gains + 1% TDS — one of the world's harshest crypto tax regimes
Is Crypto Legal in India?
Yes, cryptocurrency is legal in India — but it is not "regulated" in the traditional sense. There is no crypto-specific licensing law. Instead, the government uses two levers: taxation (Income Tax Act) and anti-money-laundering compliance (PMLA via FIU-IND).
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has repeatedly expressed a preference for prohibition, but the Supreme Court struck down the RBI banking ban in 2020, and no government bill has ever banned crypto outright. In February 2026, the Minister of State for Finance confirmed in Lok Sabha that no ban proposal is under consideration.
What is illegal is operating — or using — an exchange that has not registered with FIU-IND. The FIU issues URL blocking orders, and the Ministry of Electronics and IT instructs ISPs to enforce them. Accessing a blocked platform may be possible via VPN, but it offers no legal protection and funds may be frozen.

India Crypto Tax: Complete Guide
India has one of the world's harshest crypto tax regimes. Here is exactly what you owe:
| Tax | Rate | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Gains Tax (Sec 115BBH) | 30% + 4% cess = 31.2% | Flat rate on all VDA transfer profits. No holding-period discount. No progressive brackets. |
| TDS (Sec 194S) | 1% | Deducted at source on every VDA transfer above ₹50,000/year. Exchange deducts automatically. |
| Loss Offset | Not allowed | You cannot offset gains on one crypto with losses on another. Cannot carry forward VDA losses. |
| GST on Fees | 18% | Integrated GST charged on exchange trading fees. |
| Holding Tax | 0% | No tax for simply holding crypto. Tax triggers only on transfer (sale, swap, spend, gift). |
| Foreign Assets | Schedule FA | Holdings on offshore exchanges exceeding ₹20 lakh total foreign assets must be declared in ITR. |
| Non-Reporting Penalty | ₹200/day | For exchanges that fail to file transaction statements (from April 2026). |
| Incorrect Reporting | ₹50,000 | Flat penalty for inaccurate disclosure (from April 2026). |
💡 Why 72% of Indian Trading Goes Offshore
The 30% gains tax + 1% TDS combination caused domestic exchange volumes to fall 81% within four months of introduction. By March 2024, domestic platforms had lost 88% of their pre-tax volume. Indian users migrated to offshore P2P markets to avoid TDS tracking. The FIU crackdown is partly designed to bring this volume back onshore — but high taxes remain unchanged in Budget 2026.
How to Deposit INR to a Crypto Exchange
| Method | Speed | Available On | Fees | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | Instant | CoinDCX, ZebPay, WazirX, CoinSwitch | Usually free | Most popular; NPCI has periodically restricted crypto UPI access but banks mostly allow it |
| IMPS | Instant | Coinbase, CoinDCX, all domestic | ₹0–15 | Direct bank transfer; Coinbase launched IMPS rails June 2026 |
| NEFT / RTGS | 1–4 hours | All domestic exchanges | ₹0–20 | Best for large deposits; no upper limit on RTGS |
| P2P | 5–60 min | Binance, KuCoin (offshore registered) | Free | Buy USDT from another person via UPI/bank transfer. Use escrow only; fraud risk exists. |
Detailed Exchange Reviews
CoinDCX — Best Overall for Indian Users
CoinDCX is India's largest FIU-registered exchange by user base, with over 15 million verified Indian users. It offers direct INR deposits via UPI, IMPS and NEFT, 500+ cryptocurrencies, and automatic 1% TDS deduction — simplifying tax compliance for Indian residents. KYC uses Aadhaar + PAN with DigiLocker integration and typically completes within minutes.
The platform covers both beginners (simple buy/sell, crypto SIP) and advanced traders (spot, margin, futures) on a single interface. Funds are custodied by BitGo with insurance coverage, and CoinDCX publishes monthly proof-of-reserves reports. In July 2025, an internal operational wallet suffered a ~$44M breach — customer funds were not affected, and the company absorbed the loss from its own treasury.
Fees: 0.2–0.5% spot depending on tier; INR withdrawals are free up to standard limits. 18% GST applies on fees. Hindi and English customer support available 24/7.
Pros
- Direct UPI/IMPS/NEFT INR deposits — no P2P needed
- Automatic TDS deduction and tax reports
- 500+ coins, crypto SIP, margin & futures
- BitGo custody + insurance, proof of reserves
- Hindi + English 24/7 support
Cons
- 0.5% base spot fee is higher than global platforms
- Restrictive crypto withdrawal rules at base tier
- Past operational wallet breach (not customer funds)
Coinbase — Best Global Platform with INR Rails
Coinbase is the world's second-largest publicly traded crypto exchange and one of only four offshore platforms to complete FIU-IND registration. After initially exiting India in 2023, Coinbase returned in 2025 and launched direct INR deposits/withdrawals via IMPS in June 2026 — the first global exchange to offer full fiat rails in India.
Indian users can trade spot and perpetual futures, access the USDC-INR pair, and benefit from Coinbase's institutional-grade security and public financial reporting. The simple interface suits beginners while Coinbase Advanced offers pro charting and lower fees for experienced traders. As a US-listed company, Coinbase follows some of the strictest compliance standards globally.
Fees: 0–0.6% depending on tier and platform (Advanced is much cheaper than simple mode). IMPS deposits are instant.
Pros
- NASDAQ-listed with audited financials — highest trust
- Direct IMPS INR deposits/withdrawals (June 2026)
- USDC-INR pair for stable fiat on/off-ramp
- 250+ coins, spot + perpetual futures
- Institutional-grade security
Cons
- Simple-mode fees up to 0.6% — use Advanced
- Smaller coin selection than domestic platforms
- Relatively new to full INR integration
WazirX — Best for Low-Cost Futures
WazirX, founded by Nischal Shetty in 2018, was once India's largest domestic crypto exchange. In July 2024, it suffered a major ~$235M security breach affecting user funds. The platform has since undergone a significant restructuring: 85% of creditor funds have been distributed through a recovery token program, and in May 2026 WazirX launched INR-settled crypto futures with industry-leading fees of 0.02% maker / 0.04% taker.
For spot trading, WazirX charges 0.1% maker / 0.2% taker — among the lowest on the FIU-registered domestic market. The platform supports UPI deposits and offers 300+ coins. A mandatory knowledge assessment for futures trading demonstrates a responsible approach to leverage products.
Pros
- Lowest futures fees in India: 0.02% / 0.04%
- INR-settled futures (no USDT conversion needed)
- Competitive spot fees: 0.1% / 0.2%
- FIU-registered, UPI deposits supported
- 85% creditor recovery completed
Cons
- Major 2024 hack history — trust still rebuilding
- Recovery token process complicated for affected users
- Lower liquidity than CoinDCX at peak times
ZebPay — Best for Security & Long-Term Holders
ZebPay is India's oldest crypto exchange, launched in 2014 — a 12-year clean operating history with no major user-fund hacks. It holds ISO 27001 certification, keeps over 90% of assets in cold storage, and offers 2FA, biometric login and withdrawal address whitelisting. Daily trading volume exceeds ₹200 crore.
The platform supports UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS deposits with free UPI funding. With 115+ coins, the selection is smaller than CoinDCX but covers all major assets. ZebPay is particularly popular with security-conscious long-term holders who value stability over extensive altcoin listings. Customer support averages under 4 hours response time.
Fees: 0.5% maker/taker for spot. INR withdrawals take 1–2 business days. Crypto withdrawals complete in 10–30 minutes.
Pros
- 12-year clean track record — never hacked
- ISO 27001 certified, 90%+ cold storage
- Free UPI deposits, multiple banking rails
- Automatic TDS and compliance reporting
Cons
- 0.5% flat fee — no volume discounts
- Only 115+ coins
- Basic trading interface; limited advanced tools
CoinSwitch — Best for Beginners & Crypto SIP
CoinSwitch has India's largest registered user base at over 20 million and is built specifically for first-time crypto investors. The simple interface offers one-tap buy/sell, crypto systematic investment plans (SIPs), and curated bundles. CoinSwitch PRO provides a more advanced order-book experience for users who outgrow the beginner mode.
The platform pools liquidity from multiple sources to optimize execution prices. UPI deposits are instant, and KYC is fully digital via Aadhaar/PAN. CoinSwitch has been vocal about India's high-tax environment, with co-founder Ashish Singhal publicly lobbying for TDS reduction from 1% to 0.01%.
Pros
- 20M+ users — India's largest by registered base
- Best beginner UX with crypto SIP plans
- Instant UPI deposits and fast KYC
- Aggregates liquidity for better execution
Cons
- Simple mode spreads/fees less transparent
- 100+ coins — smaller selection
- PRO platform less mature than dedicated pro exchanges
KuCoin — Best for Altcoin Selection (P2P)
KuCoin was the first global offshore exchange to comply with India's FIU requirements, registering in March 2024. It offers the widest coin selection among FIU-registered platforms — 700+ cryptocurrencies — with a base spot fee of just 0.10%, reducible further with KCS token holdings or trading volume.
The main limitation is INR funding: KuCoin does not offer direct UPI or bank deposits. Indian users fund accounts through P2P markets, buying USDT from other users via UPI or bank transfer. KuCoin provides trading bots, staking, futures up to 100x leverage, and an NFT marketplace. It suits experienced traders who want access to smaller-cap altcoins not available on domestic platforms.
Pros
- 700+ coins — widest FIU-registered selection
- 0.10% base fee; lower with KCS/volume
- Trading bots, staking, futures, NFT marketplace
- FIU-registered as offshore reporting entity
Cons
- No direct INR — P2P only (fraud risk)
- Less localized customer support
- P2P funds can face bank account freezes
Binance — Best for Global Liquidity (P2P)
Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by volume, initially had its URL blocked in January 2024 for FIU non-compliance. It paid penalties, completed registration, and re-entered the Indian market in May 2024. It now legally serves Indian users as an offshore reporting entity with 350+ coins, deep global liquidity and the most active INR P2P market.
Like KuCoin, Binance's primary limitation for Indian users is the absence of direct UPI/bank INR rails — all fiat on/off-ramping goes through Binance P2P, where users trade USDT with each other. Binance P2P in India has deep liquidity and typically completes transactions within 5–15 minutes, but users should only trade through the built-in escrow and never accept direct payment requests outside the platform.
Pros
- World's deepest crypto liquidity
- 0.10% spot fee; BNB discounts available
- Most active INR P2P market
- 350+ coins, futures, earn products, Web3 wallet
Cons
- P2P-only INR funding — no direct bank/UPI
- P2P counterparty and bank-freeze risk
- No India-localized customer support
Blocked & Unregistered Exchanges in India
🚫 Platforms Indian Users Should Avoid
The following popular global exchanges are not FIU-registered. Their URLs are blocked by Indian ISPs. While VPN access may technically work, these platforms cannot legally serve Indian users, funds transferred from Indian bank accounts may be flagged, and users have no regulatory recourse in case of disputes:
- OKX — withdrew from India in July 2024; never completed FIU registration
- Bybit — blocked in January 2024; remains unregistered
- Kraken — never registered; URL blocked
- Gate.io, MEXC, Bitget, HTX — among 25 offshore platforms blocked in October 2025
- Various smaller offshore platforms — FIU publishes updated blocking orders periodically
Note: This list changes as platforms register or are newly blocked. Always verify an exchange's current status on the official FIU-IND FINgate portal before depositing funds.
How We Ranked These Exchanges
Our ranking considers factors specific to Indian users: FIU registration status (non-negotiable), direct INR funding options, spot and futures fees including the impact of 18% GST, coin availability, security track record (especially relevant post-WazirX), TDS automation and tax reporting quality, UPI/bank integration reliability, and Hindi/English customer support. We do not rank offshore unregistered platforms regardless of their global reputation, as using them violates PMLA compliance requirements.
